Assembly Elections 2022: Phase 4 polling gets under way

As the fourth phase of the assembly elections get under way, assembly constituencies such as Lakhimpur and Sarojini Nagar and Nighasan in Uttar Pradesh are being keenly watched.

Phase 4 polling in Uttar Pradesh got under way this morning. The phase will decide the fate of 624 candidates contesting in the 59 Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.  2.13 crore voters  have 13,813 polling stations available in the 24,580 polling booths and can vote before 6pm starting from 7am in the morning.

The districts of Uttar Pradesh covered in this phase include Fatehpur, Sitapur, Banda, Pilibhit, Hardoi, Kheri, Lucknow,  Rae Bareli and Unnao.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 50 of the 59 seats the 2017 that are in the fray today, with 41.1% late share. The Samajwadi Party came a distant second with just 4 seats in its kitty in the last elections, while the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress got two seats each.

Some prominent candidates who fate will be decided today include Abhishek Mishra of the SP in Sarojini Nagar, who is up against Rajeshwar Singh of the  BJP; Aditi Singh of the BJP, and Brajesh Pathak (BJP). The people of Lakhmipur will cast their votes today as well. The contest there is between Yogesh Verma (BJP) versus Utkarsh Verma of the the SP. Nighasan constituency will go to the hustings to vote with Shashank Verma of the BJP pitted again R.S Kushwaha of the SP.

Uttar Pradesh Phase 4

Focus today will also be on Unnao where the Congress has fielded Asha Singh, the mother of  Unnao rape victim. 

While the last elections so the BJP swiping this area of the state, this time the farmers agitation and the problem of stray cattle are serious challenges for the saffron party double-engine governments.
