Two men to watch for: Arvind Kejriwal and Yogi Adityanath

by | Mar 10, 2022 | Elections 2022, India

Two men, Arvind Kejriwal and Yogi Adityanath, will be the political personalities to watch in the coming months and years.

Even as the counting in all five states pours in, the victory of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab and the BJP retain power in Uttar Pradesh, will inevitably change the tone and tenor of the politics of the country in the next couple of years. And the ones to do that will be two political personalities — Arvind Kejriwal and Yogi Adityanath.

It is no secret that even as the political startup, the AAP had many leading personalities, few who’ve stayed on and many who left, the one who quickly established himself as the supremo is Arvind Kejriwal.

So when a prominent leader, a like Manish Sisodia of the AAP says that the victory in Punjab is the victory of the Kejriwal Model, we might be witnessing the familiar, the emergence decisively of Kejriwal as a national leader to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Opposition space.

The other personality who will be talked about and written about much in the coming months and years in India is likely to be Yogi Adityanath, also called Ajay Kumar Bisht.

The firebrand Hindutva leader, with his emphatic win in Uttar Pradesh, can even emerge as a contender for the top job in the country. That would mean that there will be quite a bit of clamour to make Yogi the prime ministerial face of the BJP. The prospect although pregnant with possibilities, will surely cause a lot of consternation both within and outside the ruling saffron party.

What what these elections have established is that two parties have two personalities who might fashion politics for some time in this country.

If one were to add a footnote to this play of personalities, the politicians who will be big losers after today could be Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, but also significant is the decline of the Bahujan Samajwadi Party’s Mayawati. Her fellow Dalit, and outgoing chief Channi might be the one who just might survive this defeat though.
