Uttar Pradesh Elections 2022: Crucial Western UP polls under way

by | Feb 10, 2022 | Elections 2022, Uttar Pradesh 2022

Phase 1 of the crucial Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2022 is under way today in the western part of the state.

Electors head to the hustings today in 58 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of wester Uttar Pradesh kickstarting the 7-phase polling in the state.
About 2.228 crore voters are to vote for 623 candidates that include 73 women.
The region which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has dominated since 2014, with as many as 53 seats of the 58 seats and with 46.3% vote share in the 2017 Assembly Elections, is being challenged by a resurgent opposition headed by the Samajwadi Party (SP) of Akhilesh Yadav and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) headed by Chaudhary Jayant Singh. It is to be seen how the two parties combining forces can take on the might of the BJP.
The Bahujan Samaj Party, although running a low-key campaign this time, got as much as 22.5% vote share in the region in 2017, while the SP came third with 14.3% and RLD with just 7.1% in 2017.
The farmer’s agitation, mismanagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the accusation that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath favoured his Thakur community, has led to widespread resentment especially in the region.
The Jat community, which dominates in districts such as Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Shamli, and Mathura, traditionally are the support base of the RLD.
The other important districts going to the polls today are Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Gautam Bhuddha Nagar, Hapur, Agra and Bulandshar.
