Venugopal and Sidhu come under attack at CWC meet

by | Mar 13, 2022 | Elections 2022, India

Venugopal is said to be close to Rahul Gandhi and the proximity between the two grew during the last Lok Sabha.

Ahead of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, many members received a call from a senior office bearer asking them to remain on guard if anyone attacked the Gandhi family over the resounding defeat in the assembly elections in five states.

These members were asked to stay silent but speak up vociferously if the Gandhi family came under attack.

Perhaps, this office bearer and other loyalists were expecting fireworks from the members of group of 23, referred to as G-23, such as Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma.

But that didn’t happen as both Azad and Sharma sounded reconciliatory. Azad merely insisted on having regular intra-party deliberations such as the CWC and other panels.

Sharma urged the leadership to desist from appointing state unit chiefs those who had come from other parties, saying such a move demoralised the cadre and leaders.

His target was obviously Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu who had raised a banner of revolt against outgoing chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and criticised the leadership for naming the CM face for the polls. It was mentioned that Sidhu had derailed the entire Congress campaign with his utterances.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole had also joined the party from the BJP and elevated to the post within a short span of time, antagonising the party loyalists.

Guns were also trained at
Congress general secretary in-organisation KC Venugopal. He came under attack for not being present at the party headquarters in Delhi.

A CWC member pointed out that in the last when there were just four general secretaries all of them would camp at the party headquarters in Delhi for a certain period to ensure that those who come to meet don’t go back disappointed.

He further said that at present there are nine general secretaries and 17 in-charges of states and none of them is available in Delhi as a result of which the workers go back without meeting anyone and unable to express their views about the state of affairs in their respective states.

Venugopal is said to be close to Rahul Gandhi and the proximity between the two grew during the last Lok Sabha.

Gandhi was impressed with Venugopal’s conduct in the House, especially how aggressively he raised the issues. He follows Gandhi like a shadow.

It is also said that the G-23 leaders wrote a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi in August 2020 seeking a full-time and visible leadership after they were convinced that Venugopal would be handed over the reins of the party, making him a proxy chief.
