Dalit leader and close confidante of Bhupinder Hooda, Uday Bhan, replaces Kumari Selja is PCC president in Haryana.

New Delhi: Dalit leader Uday Bhan, son of former legislator Gaya Lal for whom the famous phrase ‘Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram’ was coined, is the new Haryana Congress president, replacing another Dalit leader Kumari Selja.

The phrase ‘Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram’ became synonymous with rampant defections in Haryana in 1967 when Gaya Lal, an independent legislator from Hasanpur, changed three political parties in a single day resulting in topping of two governments.

The Congress also appointed Shruti Choudhry, Ram Kishan Gujjar, Jitender Kumar Bharadwaj and Suresh Gupta as its working presidents in the state.

Bhan, who is from the Scheduled Caste community and is a former legislator from Hodal, is considered a close confidant of former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

There was intense speculation that either Hooda or his son Deepender would be appointed the Haryana Congress chief but the party high command apprehended that the move could lead to escalation of infighting in the state unit with Kuldeep Bishnoi and Kiran Choudhary raising a banner of revolt. The move would have antagonised Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala too.

Sources said the Congress leadership had conveyed to Hoodas that none of them would be appointed to the top party post in Haryana.

Accordingly, Udai Bhan’s name is said to have been proposed by Hooda himself.
