RPN Singh and Venugopal

The Congress is badly missing the late Ahmed Patel. The master strategist had become a strong bridge between the high command, the leaders and the workers. It was easy to reach out to him and he would  meet each and every Congress worker from across the country at his residence till late in the night. In the past, when some Congress leader would feel sidelined and threaten to leave the party, Patel will promptly call him and persuade him to stay put.

But there is no one in the grand old party now to fill in his shoes. Recently, when the buzz of RPN Singh leaving the Congress grew louder, no one called to ask him if there was any truth in the rumours. However, Singh, who was party’s in-charge of Jharkhand, got a text message only on the day he was going to join the BJP. The message from Congress general secretary in-charge of organisation KC Venugopal read: “Are you going?” Congress leaders say that had Patel been there, he would have in fact rushed to Singh’s residence and made him change his decision. They also rue the lack of communication within the party and the absence of a channel between the high command and the leaders and workers.

On the other hand, many people in the Congress say the cleansing process is on as only those who enjoyed power during the UPA government are leaving. They can’t stay without power for long and the desperation forces them to leave the party and join the BJP, a Congress leader said, citing the examples of Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada and RPN Singh.
