Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away after a brief illness in Mumbai today. She was 92. The icon's passing away was mourned by people from all walks of life.

Lata Mangeshkar, legendary singer and music composer died in Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital on Sunday. She was 92.

The legend has been honoured by the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards, for her immense contribution to Indian cinema, having sung thousands of Hindi film songs in her illustrious and long career.

Lata Mangeshkar, also sang in over 36 regional languages. Mangeshkar, who came from a well-known musical family, also composed music and produced a few films. Hollywood films “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Life of Pi,” “Lion,” and “The Hundred-Foot Journey” have all featured her music.

Her contribution to Indian cinema for over seven decades earned her the titles Nightingale of India and Queen of Melody.

People from various areas of society expressed their grief over the passing away of the icon.  Condolence messages poured in immediately after her death was announced.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted his condolence message. “Received the sad news of Lata Mangeshkar ji’s demise. She remained the most beloved voice of India for many decades. Her golden voice is immortal and will continue to echo in the hearts of her fans. My condolences to her family, friends and fans.”

Priyanka Gandhi tweeted a picture of Lata Mangeshkar and her grandmother, late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and wrote

“भारतीय संगीत की बगिया में सुरों को चुन-चुन कर सजाने वाली सुर साम्राज्ञी सुश्री लता मंगेशकर जी के निधन का दुखद समाचार मिला।
उनके निधन से भारतीय कला जगत को एक अपूर्णीय क्षति हुई है।

ईश्वर लता जी को श्री चरणों में स्थान दें और इस दुःख की घड़ी में परिजनों को कष्ट सहने का साहस देंl”

(Received the sad news of the passing away of Ms. Lata Mangeshkar ji, the melody queen who decorated the notes in the garden of Indian music.

Her death has caused an irreparable loss to the Indian art world.

May God give place to Lata ji at the feet of Shri and give courage to the family members to bear the pain in this hour of grief.)

South Indian actor Mammooty wrote “India has lost our nightingale. Cinema and music will never be the same again. Lataji your immense body of work and your iconic voice will be unparalleled forever.”

“My earliest memories of music are of my father playing songs from movies like Aandhi, Sargam, Noori & Guide. These soundtracks have never dropped off my list of favourites.Along the way I added movies like Karz, Kabhi Kabhi, & Asha. There will never be another #LataMangeshkar RIP” writes Omar Abdullah as he reminices.

Singer A R Rehman tweets a picture of Lata Mangeshkar and him while the caption reads “Love, respect and prayers.”

Paying her tribute Madhuri Dixit Nene, tweeting a picture of the two writes “The angelic voice that made us all swoon and fall in love has gone to the heavens to spread that love. Hearing Lata Tai’s melodies over the years, remembering her image in 2 choti’s & that childlike attribute has left like an imprint that will never ever leave our hearts.”

“‘God speaks through beautiful voices’ Sad sad day for India as our nightingale leaves her mortal body. Lataji’s voice has immortalised her for ever. She will live in our hearts through her music. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and fans. RIP Lataji” writes Anushka Sharma

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has expressed his sorrow over the death of ‘Gaana Saraswathi’ Lata Mangeshkar. “I pray to the Almighty to bestow eternal peace for the departed soul and give strength to her innumerable fans to brear this grief. She will remain an eternally shining star in the world of music. Her songs are in the air every second in some or the other part of the country. Lata will remain in our hearts every moment,” Bommai said in his condolence message.
