Mumbai: Former National Investigation Agency chief and Vigilance Commissioner Sharad Kumar is the new head of the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Kumar has taken over from Shabir Hussein Shekhadam Khandwawala, a former Director General of Gujarat Police.
The ACU chief’s tenure is for three years.
Kumar is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of 1979 batch from Haryana cadre. He remained chief of the NIA for four years and following his retirement from the IPS, the government appointed him as the Vigilance Commissioner.
Besides holding various positions in the Haryana police, Kumar has served in the Central Bureau of Investigation on deputation too, first as Superintendent of Police and later as a Deputy Inspector General.
During his tenure as Director General of the NIA, the anti-terror probe agency touched new heights by cracking many terror cases which included the 2016 Pathankot attack case. During his four years as chief, the NIA became pan-India agency with a formidable reputation of carrying out fair investigations in the terror cases.
As the vigilance commissioner, Sharad Kumar was part of the inquiry team that went into the allegations leveled by the then CBI special director Rakesh Asthana against his then boss Alok Verma.
The ACU of the BCCI monitors domestic and international cricket matches of India in order to weed out corrupt elements.
