Behat, which was part of the Muzaffarabad assembly constituency before the 2008 delimitation exercise, was represented by Naresh Saini, who won it as a Congress candidate in the 2017. Behat assembly segment is belongs to the Saharanpur Lok Sabha Constituency.

In 2012, Mahaveer Singh Rana, as BSP candidate won the seat with 70,274 votes against the Congress’s Naresh Saini, who polled 69,760 votes, a mere 514 votes. Saini went on to win the seat in the 2017 elections securing 90,035 seats, while Mahaveer Singh Rana, now as BJP got 71,449 votes.
In the 2022 assembly elections, the Congress has fielded Poonam Kamboj, while the BJP contestant is Naresh Saini and the SP candidate is Umar Ali Khan. The BSP has fielded Rais Malik.
According to Census 2011, Behat, an agricultural town, had a population of 20,474, with 46.83% women and 53.16% men. The literacy rate of the town is 70.03%.
Behat belongs to Saharanpur district on the northern most tip of northwestern Uttar Pradesh.
